Advertising on hookers

Written on July 5, 2006

A Dutch design student bored with conventional advertisements has set up a fake online agency offering advertising space on prostitutes’ thighs and cleavage. Raoul Balai also proposed painting brand names on zoo animals and floating huge billboards off popular beaches to get vacationers’ attention.

“I was getting sick and tired of advertising everywhere,” Balai told reporters. “But I don’t want to preach, and I thought satire would work better.”

Prospective customers phoning his fake agency are kept on hold and bombarded with sales pitches until they give up.

As an observer of the design world, it is no surprise that the fake agency actually attracts customers. Imagine the attraction of a beer advert on a hooker’s breasts. Not to mention target audience! Or Corona billboards floating along your beach resort.

The scary part is that it’s already happening. Stickers in urinals, product placement at concerts, visual marketing is injected every where in the modern world. It is the ultimate loophole in Capitalism. If you can afford the space, you can put whatever the hell you want there. As a result you get organizations funded by their competitors and all sorts of wacky markets. Companies want to market their products, other companies sell their space to fund their own products, and consumers have no say in the matter whatsoever. Remember the Million Dollar Homepage? The website that whored its pixels out? Imagine Million Dollar Buildings. It’s happening, the world is whoring itself out. Perhaps the idea of advertising on whores is not so far off afterall.
