What AdSense format is most profitable

Written on January 9, 2007

Your most profitable AdSense formatting and color scheme is going to be the one that blends well with your site, while not being camouflaged. The two biggest mistakes I see with AdSense formatting are:

  1. The ad block is too well disguised with the website’s design
  2. The ad block is so distinguished that it screams “advertisement”

The problem with the first AdSense mistake is that your website’s visitors will miss the ad entirely. We have been exposed to advertising on TV, magazines, and the internet our whole lives. If something doesn’t particularly jump out at us, we’re not interested.

Recently I heard a blogger complain that his high-traffic blog was ranked in the top 1000 weblogs, yet he was only making $9 a day from AdSense. The problem was his ad positioning and color scheme. The ads were too well designed for his site, so no one was clicking them.

The second biggest problem in formatting AdSense is that people make the blocks too shocking. The simple reason not to do this is that it’s ugly. Your visitors will be annoyed that you have a mustard yellow advertisement on a blue background and they’ll treat your site as spam.

Not only that, but if your ads do not match your site colors they will be easily distinguished from your content and visitors will glance over them, knowing they are advertisements.

Let’s review: The most profitable AdSense format is one that blends with your content, both layout-wise and color-wise, while still managing to grab the viewer’s attention.
