The Japanese Get It
Written on October 2, 2006
Japanese know how it’s done. Generations of beautiful artwork and culture has created riveting designers that know how to complement colors.
This Japanese advertisement is a perfect example. The cars are a mending of red and blue, leading your eye to the woman’s pink jacket. The off-white head cloth and pants create the perfect pallete for the shirt, which is in turn complemented by her motorbike. To balance the left-heavy red, we see a red object behind the blue car. The blue car is balanced by the exposure of blue sky on the left. The woman’s hair and pale skin are one with the bike. In the footer, a cream yellow is used with blue and pink font.
Perhaps it is a culturally thing, but Japanese design sure has a subtle impact on the universal laws of graphics.
