AdSense testing new font formatting?

Written on February 21, 2007

It’s a little known fact that you can change your AdSense ad fonts manually. Simply apply a div style or hard tags around your code and wala! You have a new look for your ad blocks. Google hasn’t specifically stated this to be a violation of the AdSense TOS. However, chances are they wouldn’t like you tampering with the fonts yourself.

Lately, I’ve seen several sites with ad blocks that had italic AdSense font. I assumed the web designer had just forgot to close a div tag somewhere. But today I noticed the same thing happen on Ontora. When I refreshed the page, the font returned to normal.

Google is known for publicly testing new strategies before they have even been announced. And now it seems they are playing around with different font styles. Perhaps they’re considering giving AdSense Publishers control over content block fonts?

I’m not sure if a bold or italic font is going to drive your CTR through the roof. Still, I’m all for giving more control to Publishers so I would have no complaints over the matter.
